Hematology
Anemia is a signal of ailing health or drug related toxicity in a variety of settings, from cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease to HIV, hepatitis C, rheumatoid arthritis, and oncology. It has also been linked to patient outcomes in surgery and critical care settings. With such varied and extensive prevalence, it can be a challenge to reach consensus in understanding anemia among the disparate group of internal medicine specialties. Symbiotix has met this challenge head on and sought to deepen clinician understanding of the mechanisms of anemia and other hematological disorders in a variety of therapeutic areas. Our work in hematology has extended into the following therapeutic areas:
- Oncology (both cancer related and chemotherapy-related)
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) related
- HIV (both disease related and HAART related)
- Hepatitis C (Interferon and Ribavirin induced)
- Cardiovascular Disease/Diabetes-related—linked to CKD
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (both bone marrow suppressive and drug induced)
- Orthopedic Surgery (alternatives to transfusion)
- Trauma/Critical Care-related (alternatives to transfusion)
We have worked to bring hematology to the forefront of internal medicine and hospital medicine specialists’ minds and have further utilized our relationships with hematology key opinion leaders to drive our success. We have also worked to extend the research of red and white blood cell growth factors into other non-hematological applications, namely neuro and cardioprotection, but also as an immune stimulant in the battle against Crohn’s Disease. It follows logically that Symbiotix’s expertise in internal medicine would translate and make us a natural partner to keep increasing their knowledge of related hematological disorders.
